VITAMIN-D IS: A Fat Soluble Supplement, Is both a Vitamin and Hormone

VITAMIN-D BENEFITS:
*Necessary for normal growth of bones and teeth, absorption of calcium
*Protects against muscle weakness
*Involved in regulation of heart beat
*Important in preventing/treating breast and colon cancer, osteoarthritis,
*osteoporosis, and hypocalcemia
*Enhances immunity
*Necessary for thyroid function and normal blood clotting

SUPPLEMENTAL D IS:
An "Essential" vitamin, which means,
It cannot be produced from within, or not in sufficienct amounts
It must be found in food, supplements, sunshine
D2, comes from food
D3, comes from exposure to the sun
D5, is a synthetic form

VITAMIN SOURCES:
Manufactured from sunshine combined with cholesterol from our body
Sunlight needed is pure unfiltered sunlight, approximately 30 minutes a day
Dark skinned people need about 3 hours to reach same level due to pigmentation
Fatty fish (kipper, sardines, salmon, tuna, mackerel), liver, egg yolk, butter, dark leafy vegetables

DEFICIENCY SIGNS:
Shortage causes loss of minerals from the bones (osteomalacia) where
bones are sore, tender and weak
Possiblility of deafness occurring, Muscle twitching, convulsions
In children it can cause rickets
Can cause burning sensation in mouth and throat, diarrhea, insomnia and visual problems

TOXIC:
Toxicity level must be kept in mind, avoid excessive vitamin d
Do not take without calcium

TOXICITY SIGNS:
Elevated calcium level
Lower appetite
Increased thirst
Nausea
Vomiting
Drowsiness
Abdominal pains

RDA:
400 IU
This is the minimum

MORE MAY BE REQUIRED IF:
You are very seldom exposed to sunlight
You always wear sunscreen greater than an 8 SPF
You are on a strict vegan diet
Your liver or kidneys are compromised in any way
