VITAMIN-B12 Is: A Water Soluble Supplement
ALSO KNOWN AS: Cobalamin, Cyanocobalmin

COBALAMIN BENEFITS:
Helps in normal function of the brain and nervous system
It is involved in metabolism in every cell
Helps with DNA synthesis and regulation, and also energy production and fatty acid synthesis
Its effects are not completely known
Is the most chemically complex of all the vitamins

VITAMIN B-12 IS USED FOR
*It helps maintain healthy nerve cells and red blood cells
*Is needed to make DNA
*Is bound to protein in food
*Hydrochloric acid in the stomach releases B-12 from protein during digestion

SUPPLEMENTAL B-12 IS:
A "Non-Essential" Vitamin, which means
It is manufactured from within
However, If you have pernicious anemia, gastrointestinal disorders, are over age 50 or are a vegetarian, a supplement is probably necessary

VITAMIN SOURCES:
Beef, fish, trout, salmon, haddock, clams, oysters, tuna, milk, eggs, meat, poultry, fortified breakfast cereals, yogurt, pork, american, cheddar and mozzarella cheese

DEFICIENCY SIGNS:
An underlying stomach or intestinal disorder can result in B-12 deficiency, which limits its absorption
Often the only sign is anemia from the intestinal disorder
Fatigue, weakness, nausea, constipation, flatulence (gas), loss of appetite, weight loss, maintaining balance, depression, confusion, poor
memory, soreness of mouth/tongue

TOXIC:
Has a very low potential for toxicity

TOXICITY SIGNS:
No adverse affects have been associated with excess B-12 among healthy individuals
The main concern should be the lack of B-12 absorbtion

RDA:
2.4 mcg for men
2.4 mcg for women
2.6 mcg for pregnancy
2.8 mcg for lactation

MORE MAY BE NEEDED:
If you have pernicious anemia, gastrointestinal disorders, are over age 50 or are a vegetarian, a supplement is most likely necessary
